Molded Pulp, Shaping the Environmental Future of Packaging

Fudy believes that molded pulp has become the mainstream choice of the packaging industry. With the continuous improvement of technology, more and more designers have proved that packaging can be both environmentally friendly and beautiful. Moreover, the cost is completely affordable.

The CreatiFe Power of Design – iF DESIGN AWARD 2021‘ embraces the concepts of sustainability, originality, and customizability, and many of the awarded packaging designs are made of molded pulp. Here are some examples:

1.New Interpretation of an Old Tradition—Environmental Packaging of Kinmen Sorghum liquor

ChihLee University of Technology created a tailor-made super-fitting coat for Taiwan’s Kinmen Sorghum Liquor. The molded pulp packaging uses recycled paper to directly press the embossed totem onto the bottle, allowing consumers to easily identify the long history of Kinmen Sorghum Liquor from just the outer packaging. This design is environmentally friendly and full of Zen, with good brand recognition, this perfectly blends the past and the present of the product.

2.Multifunctional—Srisangdao Rice Recycled Packaging

Rice is the staple food of Thailand, and it is also a traditional Thai crop. Srisangdaw Ricemill Co., Ltd. (Roi-Et, Thailand) demonstrates a multifunctional packaging design which uses rice bran as the material. After the consumer finishes the rice, the packaging can be kept as a tissue paper box. By creating a second function for the packaging it will not be discarded. What a clever design!

3.Handle with Care—Egg Box Cosmetics Gift Set

In the Mandarin context, boiled eggs are often used to describe gorgeous, glowing, ultra-smooth skin. Therefore, the designers played with this metaphor and created a cosmetic packaging design that looks like a box of eggs. Molded pulp packaging made of recycled materials was most commonly used to make egg boxes in the early days. Now it is transformed into cosmetic packaging, conveying to consumers the message that “skin is as delicate as an egg and needs to be protected.” The design is simple, the packaging is interesting, and the meaning is profound.

4.Draw a Suitcase—Soft Candy Packaging

The packaging of Minimax vitamin soft candy is made according to the 3R (reduce, reuse, and recycle) principle. The molded pulp packaging adopts recycled materials; the production process is simple, and the product is easily degraded and recycled. The exterior design of the suitcase allows children to doodle, making a unique suitcase.
