In the race to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, industries worldwide are under pressure to rethink their carbon outputs and adopt decarbonization strategies. As a vital link in the supply chain, the packaging sector significantly influences our clients’ overall carbon footprint. At Fudy, we’re dedicated to standing by our clients as steadfast partners in their journey toward sustainable practices. We aim to help them reach their sustainability targets by offering carbon-reducing solutions.

The Environmental Impact of Long-Distance Transportation

Many of our key clients previously had to import packaging materials from distant locations like mainland China and New Zealand, which undoubtedly led to significant carbon emissions. For instance, the average shipment distance from mainland China to Taiwan spans about 2,000 kilometers, while shipments from New Zealand cover a staggering 9,000 kilometers. These long-haul journeys escalate carbon emissions and pose logistical and financial risks to the supply chain.

Localized Procurement: A Path to Decarbonization

We’ve proposed a solution centered on local procurement to mitigate carbon emissions and advance our sustainable supply chain objectives. By identifying alternative local materials, we have successfully procured materials produced in Taiwan, significantly reducing transportation distances and carbon emissions. Compared to their distant counterparts, these local materials only require transportation spanning approximately 100 kilometers, resulting in a remarkable reduction in carbon emissions. Despite the slightly higher cost of local materials, our clients have embraced this solution, considering the savings in transportation expenses and the environmental benefits.

Local Procurement

We’ve persuaded our clients to transition to local materials through persistent advocacy and unwavering commitment. Currently, the packaging of their products aligns with the goal of localized procurement and production in sustainable supply chain management, markedly reducing carbon emissions. Our estimates indicate that this shift has led to nearly a 40% decrease in our clients’ carbon footprint through localized sourcing.

The Sustainable Benefits of Localized Procurement

These findings underscore the dual benefits of choosing local materials: Not only does it curb carbon emissions, but it also reduces costs and bolsters the resilience of the local supply chain. This achievement fosters environmental stewardship and contributes to the growth of the local economy.
