Japan’s Friendly Packaging Philosophy: 4 keywords to solve packaging problems

At the Taipei International Packaging Exhibition Seminar in 2019, director Junichi Hirai of the Japan Packaging Institute’s packaging standardization research department suggested four steps to solve packaging problems:

1. Increasing packaging functionality.
2. Food personalization and reduced food quantity.
3. Consideration of the elderly and the disabled.
4. To consider the 3Rs for the environment (reduce, reuse, and recycle).

From these four ideas, we can learn about the Japanese packaging philosophy of “friendliness.” Packaging should not only be attractive, nor should it merely protect. Packaging should be friendly. As packaging design practitioners, we should try to utilize packaging design to solve more problems in life, make packaging more accessible to users, and take responsibility for the environment.
