Bio-plastic GEX/GMX packaging application examples and sustainable approaches

The most basic function of packaging is to protect the product contained within it. However, packaging can also help build a brand’s image and market a product. In the previous article, we mentioned GEX/GMX, a bio-based plastic material that is able to reduce the use of plastic and carbon. The picture shows an inner packaging tray for electronic products made using the vacuum forming method. At first glance, this is no different from a standard plastic inner tray. However, the inner tray of this package replaces 25% of the raw plastic material with GEX bio-calcium resins. As a result, plastic and carbon usage can be deceased by 25%.

The finished product mixed with GEX bio-calcium resin has precisely the same appearance and durability as the 100% plastic product.

A well-developed recycling system makes GEX bio-based plastic packaging more environmentally friendly.

With GEX/GMX bio-calcium resins, bio-based plastic packaging can be recycled alongside ordinary plastic products. For example, the inner tray mentioned above is made of 25% GEX bio-calcium resin mixed with PP (which belongs to category No. 5 PP, Polypropylene) and can be recycled together with No.5 PP.

If the plastic recycling industry continues to develop well, recycling can be truly implemented, and we can form an actual recycling cycle. It will give plastic products further opportunities to become an environmentally friendly choice.

For the time being, plastic products cannot be entirely replaced. In the meantime, consumers can sort and recycle their plastics. In addition, the manufacturing industry should increase the usage of recycled plastic materials and make proper use of bio-based plastic technology. After all, actively reducing plastic usage and reusing plastic materials is the most feasible plan.
