Using less plastic has become a new normal, along with regulations restricting the use of certain plastic products.

Reducing plastic use has been an environmental ambition for decades. The slow reduction of plastic usage is insufficient to meet the 2050 net zero goal outlined by the ESG wave. Governments across many countries have resorted to stricter plastic usage restrictions. Let us share with you two rules from Taiwan:

Legal limits on single-use plastic beverage cups

If you come and visit Taiwan, you will find all kinds of hand-shaken drink shops everywhere. Pearl milk tea (also known as bubble tea or boba) is famous internationally and has won people’s hearts all over the world. Hand-shaken drinks are one of the most well-known Taiwanese specialties. Whether the weather is cold or hot, or the mood is good or bad, one (or several) cups of hand-shaken drink a day is already a part of everyday life for many Taiwanese.

However, hand-shaken drink consumption has also brought much plastic waste to Taiwan. Therefore, the Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) officially announced a new regulation at the end of April 2022, requiring all local governments to submit a schedule for banning single-use plastic cups before the end of 2024. Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, officially banned disposable plastic beverage cups in December 2022.

New Regulations on Limiting E-commerce Packaging

In addition to scheduling restrictions for the use of disposable plastic cups, the EPA also held a meeting on December 12th, 2022,  to discuss the draft Parties Subject to and Means for the Online Shopping Packaging Restrictions. Restrictions on online shopping packaging materials are imposed by the EPA. For example, articles containing polyvinyl chloride (PVC) materials shall not be used, and priority shall be given to the original color of the material used for paper packages. All packaging materials must contain a certain amount of recycled paper or recycled material.

The result of this meeting will be announced in January 2023 at the earliest, and the regulations will be implemented in July of the same year.

What will happen next?

When the use of plastic disposable tableware and plastic e-commerce packaging has been restricted by law, we expect that other commodity packaging will soon face similar regulations.
