What is Appropriate Packaging and Packaging Testing?

There is an expression in Japanese, “適正包裝”(tekiseihousou),in English it means “appropriate packaging”. According to the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Dictionary, the definition for “適正包裝” is as follows:

Appropriate packaging saves resources and energy

Appropriate packaging saves resources and energy and considers disposal methods. It is reasonable and fair packaging. For example, appropriate packaging must withstand vibration, impact, pressure, moisture, temperature, and humidity to prevent mechanical products from being damaged during transit. Regarding commodity packaging, appropriate packaging must not be excessive or oversized. In order to eliminate defects, appropriate packaging emphasizes protection, safety, units, labels, volume, and packaging cost.

Based on the definition above, we can understand appropriate packaging to be reasonable and proper. The Japan Packaging Institute set up the “Appropriate Packaging Award,” part of the annual Japan Packaging Competition. According to them, appropriate packaging may not necessarily be the most trendy or eye-catching, but it should reduce packaging volume, weight, and cost, saving resources and labor. Accordingly, this conforms more easily to today’s sustainable environmental spirit.

Finding the right solution for your product, saving resources, and avoiding possible damage in the logistics process are Fudy’s primary tasks. Rather than lip service, appropriate packaging needs to be tested.

To meet customer needs, packaging produced by Fudy usually goes through the following tests:

Drop testing: if a carton is dropped during transportation, is it still possible to ensure that the products in the box are intact?

Compression testing: is the strength of the packaging sufficient to ensure the safety of stacked loads?

Wear resistance testing: is the printing surface damaged during transportation?

Environmental stress testing: does the packaging protect the product from damage caused by temperature differences?

Vibration testing: have the products shifted in the packaging due to bumps and vibrations during the logistics process?

Fudy commonly uses the tests above. If needed, Fudy also provides other necessary testing services. Please don’t hesitate to contact us.
