Our earth is like a patient with many chronic diseases, and a more environmentally friendly production model is urgently needed to relieve the symptoms. Many people believe that the “circular economy” is the best treatment for the earth; at the same time, it can also meet our production needs for daily life products.

What is a circular economy?

After the Industrial Revolution, people have been applying a linear economic pattern, following the ‘take-make-dispose’ scheme. Many products seem to be produced only to be discarded. Such a consumption style has caused a lot of waste and has become an unaffordable burden for the earth.
Therefore, in the late 1970s, Walter R. Stahel began to advocate for the idea of “cradle to cradle,” which has become a fundamental text on the circular economy. Unlike the linear production and consumption model, the circular economy attempts to recycle and reuse resources at the end of a product’s life to reduce wasting resources or even to achieve zero waste. The commonly heard 3R (recycle, reduce, reuse) is developed based on this approach.

Think about circular approach at the beginning stage of design

The concept of the circular economy is easy to talk about, but it seems to violate the natural desire of human beings. Therefore, the circular economy has not yet become the mainstream economic model.

Many designers are keen to design exquisite packaging, but very few of them think about recycling or reusing packaging resources. Fudy firmly believes that we should adopt and apply a circular economy approach from the beginning stage of any product design.

Design studios Goods and Heydays have designed a branding and packaging identity system for an AI collaborative camera. Let’s look at this packaging design (We think it’s a simple yet fantastic design).

Modular design reduces shipping volume

This packaging has a square appearance, and the design concept is based on modularization. We can imagine modularized packaging as the building blocks, and this kind of shape is particularly suitable for transportation. Moreover, Goods and Heydays considered the size of the standard transport pallet to design this packaging; therefore, the finished product can be perfectly stacked and fitted. The focus of this design is to minimize transport volume.

Easy-to-recycle flat packs

The whole package is made of unprocessed corrugated cardboard which adopts a flat structure design. In other words, this packaging is entirely made of paper to support a three-dimensional buffer space. This design is easy to assemble and can be painlessly flattened for recycling. The designer intends to ensure that no matter where the package is shipped, it can be recycled locally.

The corrugated board without post-press processing can be directly recycled and reused without extra processes such as degumming or separation. Furthermore, the designer was inspired by the products, using simple squares and rectangles as abstract descriptions and printing them in white ink on kraft and black paper, conveying a neat and modern visual atmosphere.

Paper Structural Packaging – Pack all Possibilities

Let's talk about Paper structural packaging- Pack all Possibilities The success or failure of packaging comes from two main elements: "material" and "structure." Material and structure together decide the effectiveness of packaging protection, the convenience of product delivery, and level of consumer satisfaction. The result of this combination of premium material and intelligent structural design with excellent quality benefits business interests and brand image.
