It’s finally 2023. After three long years of COVID 19 pandemic restrictions, the world is opening. Even China, where the prevention and controls were the strictest, reopened its borders on January 8th, 2023. Looking back, don’t we have a resilient society? Despite so many severe challenges; we are still here, working hard, slowly moving forward!
In retrospect, the world became more gray in 2020. All the world’s colors were covered, whether it was due to the pandemic, the smoke of the Russo-Ukrainian War, or even the flying ash that rampant gray rhino kicked up.
However, the world is already becoming brighter and more colorful again.
Pantone has announced the representative color of the year for 2023 as “Viva Magenta”, a natural red. According to Pantone: “PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.”
Alternative to the color chosen by Pantone, the Japanese Fashion Color Association (JAFCA), chose luminous yellow as their color of the year. This yellow is like the morning sun, not too dazzling, but bringing full hope and making people feel brighter. The keywords for luminous yellow are diversity, symbiosis, healing, luminosity, gradient, suitable temperature, and blurred boundaries (interestingly, this also echoes the focus on “biodiversity” from COP15).
