According to the article “Designing broadband equipment for maximum eco-sustainability” (published by NOKIA on April 13th, 2022), in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to meet the 1.5 °C target and to minimize the negative impact of its products on the environment; Nokia has carried out comprehensive design innovations for its product and packaging designs. The “life cycle” is the essential element in this series of innovative thinking.

Nokia’s approach towards innovation, in terms of product design, focuses on optimizing the use of raw materials, maximizing product recyclability potential, and minimizing power consumption. As for packaging design, the focus is to reduce the environmental impact of the packaging itself and transport, installation, and field operations. (published by NOKIA on April 13th, 2022)

The product packaging, designed by Nokia with this innovative approach, was praised by the 2022 Red Dot and IF Design Awards.

While studying this packaging case, Fudy discovered that there are many sustainable packaging design ideas worth learning, and we would like to share them with you:

  1. Maximize the use of recycled materials, such as recycled cardboard.
  2. Use structural design cleverly so that packaging can be entirely flattened, making it recyclable to the greatest extent.
  3. Do not sacrifice packaging protection for the environment.
  4. Take users’ usage habits into account and use structural design for easier and safer user unboxing experiences.

This awarded packaging fully replaces packaging foam, rubber cushioning material, and plastic film with a corrugated paper structure. By applying structural design, the corrugated paper is transformed into an elastic and shock-absorbing cushioning material. This maintains the packaging’s protective function while being environmentally friendly.

The square shape of this packaging makes it easy to stack and can reduce transportation volume. Moreover, it can be fully flattened and recycled after use, enabling a prolonged packaging life cycle.

It is also worth mentioning that NOKIA’s designers have considered users’ convenience when moving the product, and made structural design adjustments accordingly. When users are moving the product, they only need to take the outer carton cover, remove the boxes on the left and right sides of the carton, and use the product’s handles to lift the product.

Friendly to both users and the environment, Fudy believes that Nokia’s packaging design innovation is worth studying and reconfirms that paper structural packaging is indeed one of the best solutions for sustainable packaging.

Power for the possible!
