Three W’s Explain Why Fudy Group is Getting FSC™ Certification

Why FSC™ Certification?

Forests are the lungs of the earth, through which everything breathes. However, since the development of industry and economic activities, large-scale deforestation has caused the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, exacerbating climate change. According to a Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) report, the global forest area is disappearing at a rate of 7.3 million hectares every year due to excessive human consumption. Thus, developing strategies to reconcile sustainable development with forest protection is urgent. However, it is due to human desires and demands that the forest area is reduced. Shouting slogans regarding forest conservation while ignoring the needs of human beings is not a practical solution. So how should we protect the forest while simultaneously maintaining a certain degree of commercial development?

Fortunately, trees are organic and renewable resources. If they are appropriately managed, trees can be an endless resource. The management of forests is called forestry, the development and utilization of forests in a rational and sustainable way can generate social and economic benefits. For example, the production of forest products, such as wood pulp and furniture, which are called forest products.

Compared with plastic, forest products can be degraded and returned to nature through biogeochemical cycles more easily. In addition, they can be redesigned and remade into new products through industrial recycling, which is in line with the concept of the circular economy proposed by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF). The EMF believe that a circular economy is restorative or regenerative by value and design. It is underpinned by a transition to renewable energy and materials and is based on three design principles: to eliminate waste and pollution, to circulate products and materials, and to regenerate nature. Hence, forest products can be regarded as a more environmentally friendly packaging choice.

As a result of human beings’ unlimited needs and desires, without effective management, the forest resource will be exhausted soon. Therefore, the Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC™) was established to respond to the demand for sustainable forest management.

What is FSC™ certification?

The FSC™ is a non-governmental organization founded in 1993. Its purpose is to promote responsible management of the world’s forests. The FSC™ believes that the more people who choose to use FSC™-certified materials, the more easily we can effectively crowd out products made from unsustainable woods.

The FSC™ has formulated a rigorous management method for tracing the production footprint for products. Using the FSC™ platform, we can easily trace the entire footprint of a product’s supply chain and even down to its original forest. By establishing an international standard and guidelines, we can achieve forest management that is both environmentally friendly and sustainable.

There are two main certifications in the FSC™ Forest Stewardship Council:

  1. Forest Management (FM)

The FSC forest management certification is designed mainly to review forest management plans and the actual operation of forests. FM confirms that the forest is being managed to preserve biological diversity, to consider the lives of local people and workers, and doing so while ensuring sustain economic viability and regular assessment.

  1. Chain of Custody (CoC)

The FSC chain of custody certification provides a credible assurance that materials used in the production chain (in the packaging industry: paper, pulp, etc.) are made from well-managed forests, reclaimed materials, or other regulated resources.

The primary purpose of this certification is to trace the source of product materials. Potential applicants for the certification:

  • forest product manufacturers.
  • suppliers.
  • corporates sales (furniture manufacturers, publishers, paper industry, printing, and packaging industry, etc.).

Go Green! Let’s start with sustainable packaging!

Packaging is the first impression you make with the consumer, so let’s make it the first step of going green. Overproduction is costing us the earth. However, nowadays, it is pretty tricky for anybody, whether we are producers or consumers, to escape the cycle of production and consumption. How to make changes in this cycle and leave a ray of light for our planet is a question everyone needs to ask themselves,
