For the sake of our shared living environment, environmental protection is the new focus, and ESG (Environment, social, and governance) is an important trend the development of enterprises globally. Every time a new product is launched, in addition to taking profitability into account, the product also has to comply with various environmental performance indexes. Nowadays, consumers want products that are not only good but are also environmentally friendly.

Therefore, going “plastic-free” seems to bethe natural packaging choice.

Why are we trying to be plastic-free?

As we all know, plastic is very durable and degrade slowly. However, precisely because of the non-degradable nature of plastic, it has existed in the environment in various forms for hundreds of years (or even longer). This causes disasters that the Earth can hardly bear. Moreover, from beginning to end, the life-cycle of plastic is highly dependent on the petrochemical industry. The petrochemical industry causes an extraordinary quantity of emissions of greenhouse gases which accelerates climate change. Therefore, limiting plastic usage is an essential requirement of fulfiiling the common goal of net-zero emissions.

Fudy provides plastic-free packaging options such as molded pulp and paper structure.

Is “plastic-free” packaging really environmentally friendly?

Plastic began to appear in the industrial supply chain in the early 20th century. Since then, plastic has been the most commonly used polymeric material in our daily lives for more than 100 years. Plastic has many advantages (it is lightweight, easy to shape, waterproof, durable, and has high barrier properties)which makes it braodly usable across industries. Moreover, over the past 100 years, a mature plastic industry gradually formed, and the prices of the material stabilized. To sum up, plastic is generally acknowledged as a useful and cheap packaging material.

The moisture-proof and moisture-resistant properties of plastic make it capable of adapting to various environments and thus is suitable for packaging products sold worldwide. The primary job of packaging is to “protect the product,” plastic packaging lining can achieve this task effectively at a low cost. It follows that the packaging industry still has a long way before becoming entirely plastic-free.

If the packaging cannot provide perfect protection, any damage to the product during transportation will result in a waste of resources.

Packaging is a process of comprehensive evaluation!

Fudy Group believes that we can find a balance between profitability and sustainability by carefully reviewing shipping conditions, sales environments, and by supporting a complete range of packaging tests (such as drop tests, compression tests, and vibration tests).

If, after the above evaluation, it is found that plastic packaging is still the best choice, then choosing plastic packaging may be a responsible decision for the product, for the company, and for their consumers. After all, reducing product loss and prolonging a product’s lifespan are also crucial parts of fulfillingpackaging’s mission of becoming environmentally friendly.

If you can’t completely remove plastic, then start with reducing plastic!

Even if we need to use plastic packaging, we can still take steps to reduce the quantities of plastic required. Limiting plastic usage can be achieved by using recycled plastic, bio-based plastic, or structural design capabilities to reduce unnecessary plastic elements.

In the following article, we will explain the plastic reduction technology packaging options provided by Fudy Group.
