India is the only country from the world’s top five malaria-prone regions outside of Africa, therefore preventing dengue fever during the summer monsoon is a major issue for the Indian government.
Malaria and dengue fever are fatal diseases that are both carried by mosquitoes. Mosquitos are carriers of diseases which are extremely difficult to prevent and control. The prevention success rate is positively related to a location environmental hygiene.
After the monsoon season Every year, a special train equipped with powered sprayers departs from Delhi to spray insecticides along the route.
According to Hong Meijuan, a writer living in India: “It is said that the blue city of Jodhpur is painted blue to prevent mosquitoes. It may be related to the fact that blue is the color of Brahma, one of the three main gods.” Because of this, it is common to see Indian people paint their houses blue to repel mosquitoes.
Burning mosquito coils is the most commonly used method in India. There are many formulations of mosquito coils, however, most of them mainly using mosquito-repelling incenses.
In such a densely populated country, no matter how many insecticides are sprayed or mosquito coils burned, mosquitoes cannot be stopped at the source. Health authorities in India have found that outdoor garbage collection points and stagnant water breed mosquitoes. If the problem of stagnant water cannot be handled appropriately, mosquitoes breeding will result forming a vicious circle.
Mosquito coil brand Maxx Flash collaborated with VMLY&R in Mumbai, to launch the Killer Pack mosquito coil. Not only does the mosquito coil repel mosquitoes, but in addition the Killer Pack’s outer packaging is 100% decomposable and contains 5% active probiotic Bacillus thuringiensis. When the outer packaging of the Killer Pack is discarded, it will start to decompose and release the special probiotic bacteria strain, which then effectively kills mosquito larvae. Furthermore, the Killer Pack has already been approved by the World Health Organization to be entirely non-toxic for the environment.
The Killer Pack not only has the effect of repelling mosquitoes, but the outer packaging also strives to solve the root cause problem of mosquito breeding, and by doing so, breaking the vicious cycle of environmental hygiene problems in India at once. This creativity earned the Killer Pack a big win at the 2022 Cannes Lions Award in Health & Wellness.
How do we add more value to packaging? This may be the big question of environmental sustainability.
