Fudy’s annual design theme – “Pack a Home | Innovative Pet Adoption Design Project” Part 2- Design Problem Solving

Following the previous article, “Fudy’s annual design theme – Pack a Home | Innovative Pet Adoption Design Project Part 1 – Project Background and Goals”, Fudy identified the animal protection issue currently faced in Taiwan: stray dogs and cats causing harm to native species. Through data collection, we outlined the current adoption process in Taiwan, identified pain points in the adoption process, and chose this as the core problem to solve. We aim to increase adoption rates and reduce return rates through innovative adoption tools.

Redefining the adoption process and reducing return rates through tool design

The adoption channels in Taiwan are pretty diverse, including animal shelters under the jurisdiction of animal protection offices, adoption services provided by animal welfare groups, foster homes, adoption communities, online adoption platforms, and even some pet stores that have become adoption channels.

After cats and dogs waiting for adoption enter the shelter, they live with other peers. They must go through physical or online adoption events and interact with potential adopters before going to their “future home.” Once they get there, they need to adapt to the people and the surroundings before finally achieving a balanced life with their family, which is a true “coming home.”

As the number of stray animals increases, their “temporary home” often lacks space and has poor living conditions. To find suitable adopters, pet owners or adoption organizations must find ways to reach potential adopters through offline and online channels. At the same time, they hope to increase adopters’ knowledge of animal care and help them adapt to changes during the adaptation period.

However, current adoption organizations and county/city shelters need more staffing to actively provide pre-adoption care knowledge; they can only offer consultation when required. Due to long-term space shortages in shelters, this pressure makes it difficult to screen adopters and provide matching consultations properly. This causes most potential adopters to lack the judgment about which type of cat or dog suits them best. Due to their incomprehension or unpreparedness, some adopters bring back animals that do not fit their lifestyle, leading to family disputes or personal overload, ultimately resulting in abandonment.

Promoting corporate sustainable goals while demonstrating brand design and sustainability

Given the difficulties in the process of stray animals findng home as mentioned above, this project hopes to assist Taiwan’s leading adoption network: animal shelters under the jurisdiction of animal protection offices through design. By deeply exploring the needs and pain points of potential adopters and the animals in the adoption process, we redefine the journey of finding home and use innovative design to help adopters and cats/dogs adapt to their new lives more quickly and smoothly.

Through this project, Fudy hopes to demonstrate its commitment and contribution to sustainable development while improving the current adoption process, reducing abandonment rates, and reducing the number of stray animals. This is a challenge and improvement for Fudy and a social responsibility practice.
