Responding to the SDGs, Using Innovative Design to Improve Stray Animal welfare , Promote Ecological Balance, and Preserve Biodiversity

When Fudy decided to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through an “Annual Design Theme,” we recognized the multitude of vast issues in the world that demand solutions. Selecting the appropriate point of entry became a question in itself.

According to our survey, over half of our design team colleagues have companion animals at home.

We’ve decided to start from an issue closest to our hearts, selecting “Pack a Home | Innovative Design Project for Adoption Tools” as this year’s “Annual Design Theme.” This project not only emphasizes the emotional connection between humans and animals, but also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of Terrestrial Ecosystem Conservation (SDG15). Our commitment lies in addressing the issue of stray animals, reclaiming wild spaces for native wildlife, and promoting the preservation of biodiversity.

Based on our survey, over half of our design team have companion animals at home, and approximately half of these animals were adopted. This inspired us to focus on the issue of stray animals, leading us to undertake concrete innovative initiatives. By addressing this issue, we respond to what is closest to everyone’s hearts and contribute to SDG15. Our aim is to aid the reintegration of stray dogs and cats into human society while safeguarding the ecological habitat of wild animals, thereby preserving the richness of biodiversity.

First Stop: Visit to an Animal Shelter

Our innovation process kicked off with comprehensive data collection. Through immersive visits to animal shelters, we firsthand experienced the conditions of the sheltered animals, gaining a deeper understanding of their needs and challenges. This visit deeply touched and resonated with our design team, fostering greater empathy and engagement in the “Pack a Home” project.

Second Stop: Expert Co-Creation Workshop

Second Stop, we invited cross-disciplinary experts including canine and feline behaviorists, veterinarians, animal rights advocates, and adoption agencies to participate in an expert co-creation workshop. This workshop centered around the themes of “Discover” and “Define,” as we collectively delved into the definition of a home, its components, and the needs and scenarios of users (both humans and animals). This process ignited the creativity of our designers, and the involvement of experts allowed us to more accurately pinpoint the core issues at hand.

Third Stop: Establishing Design Directions

Through shelter visits and the expert workshop, we successfully engaged our designers both emotionally and rationally, ultimately determining four design directions:

  1. Introducing Adoptable Cats and Dogs through Adoption Boxes.
  2. Creating an Adoption Atmosphere with Adoption Boxes.
  3. Transforming Adoption Boxes into Tools for Post-Adoption Care Reminders and Habit Formation.
  4. Redefining the Value of Adoption Boxes beyond a Mere Container.

Now, we are on the brink of entering the prototype development and testing phase. Let us collectively witness the evolution of this design as we give our all to bring about the best possible outcomes.

At Fudy, we firmly believe that every innovative design has the potential to bring about change in the world. The “Pack a Home | Innovative Design Project for Adoption Tools” will continue its dedicated efforts, contributing to the welfare of stray animals, ecological conservation, and biodiversity.

Stay tuned as we embark on this transformative journey, where design meets purpose and innovation meets impact.
